The Singapore City Gallery is a highly immersive and interactive gallery that features urban planning challenges and the innovative solutions that tackle them. Visitors are able to discover how Singapore was transformed from a fledging nation in the 1960s to one of the most liveable cities in Asia.

How Our City Works
Summary: At the heart of the newly revamped gallery lies an immersive, visually stunning interactive space. Visitors are enveloped in an experience where an interactive LED floor and touch-sensitive walls respond to their every movement. This dynamic environment showcases the intricate workings of our city’s underground systems—water, waste, energy, greenery, and transport—synergizing seamlessly to manage our limited resources efficiently.
After the show, visitors can interact with a projection wall to discover actionable ways to adjust their lifestyles and alleviate strain on urban infrastructure.
Methodology: Interactive Projection Wall; Interactive LED floor; Multi-users
My Role: Concept, Art Direction, UX/UI Design, Animations & Transitions
Art Direction: Vibrant colors are strategically employed to enhance projection clarity, distinguishing and highlighting the five key elements: Water, Energy, Waste, Greenery, and Transport.
Challenges Faced:
- The pixelation of the LED floor posed visibility challenges for icons and graphics.
- The project’s tight timeline necessitated frequent adjustments to meet delivery milestones.
Solution:
- Extensive testing with developers to refine icon styles (line/solid, size, color) to improve visibility on the LED floor.
- Team collaboration secured additional resources and time to ensure timely milestone achievements.
What I Learnt: Effective resource management and task allocation are critical for ensuring the on-time delivery of complex projects.
Forward Looking Planning
Summary: URA reviews and prepares strategic plans to take in the latest socio-economic and demographic trends, as well as current national development strategies. Many good outcomes we see in today’s built environment are a result of visionary planning since the 1970s. This interactive allows visitors to watch videos covering this topic to learn more.
