In collaboration with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), rail operator SMRT Trains has launched the Singapore Rail Discovery Centre (SRDC), to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Singapore’s rail network. This center highlights the evolution of Singapore’s rail networks and aims to educate younger generations about the rail industry. The SRDC also features numerous interactive experiences for visitors.

Rail Challenge

Summary: This interactive is a 4-player role-playing game that uses HTC Vive trackers to manage a busy train station during peak hours. Players assume the role of Service Ambassador, Station Operations Staff, Operations Control Centre Staff, and Rail Engineer, focusing on crowd and crisis management. Scoring is based on team performance, emphasizing collaboration and problem-solving.

Methodology: Interactive Table Projection with HTC Vive Tracker; Wall Projection for Score Board; Up to 4 users

My Role: Concept, Game Logic, Art Direction, UX/UI Design, Animations & Transitions
Art Direction: Game graphics UI are designed to appeal to younger crowds, with transitions to help players understand the game flow and make the content easier to understand.

Challenges Faced:

  1. How to effectively utilize the HTC Vive tracker for game interaction.
  2. How to teach visitors how the game works.
  3. How to make the device easy and comfortable to hold during gameplay.

Solution:

  1. Collaborated with the developer to research and understand the device’s limitations, then brainstormed how to use it for game selections.
  2. Included an interactive guided tutorial at the start of the game to help users learn and familiarize themselves with the controls.
  3. Installed a handle replicating a lever control in a train control room to enhance the user experience.

What I Learnt: Interactive media is not limited to touch devices, AR, VR, etc. This project broadened my knowledge of utilizing unconventional tools to achieve our desired outcomes.

Rail Journey

Summary: SMRT has transformed drastically over the years to meet the changing needs of Singaporeans. This interactive display allows visitors to explore SMRT’s rail journey via hand gestures, navigating a timeline of milestones to learn more about the company’s history and developments.

Methodology: Gesture-based Interactive using LIDAR Sensor; Single user

My Role: Concept, Art Direction, UX/UI Design, Animations & Transitions
Art Direction: Interactive milestones styled to resemble a train network map, enhancing visual appeal and thematic consistency.

Challenges Faced:

  • The sensor’s high sensitivity affected the accuracy of the pointer used for selections.
  • Historical milestones can be perceived as dry and unengaging. Making the content interesting and interactive was a challenge.

Solution:

  • Due to the sensor’s sensitivity limitations, we designed larger UI buttons to make interactions easier and more accurate.
  • Added animations of train doors opening and closing, with moving scenery outside the window, to simulate the experience of traveling back in time to each milestone.

What I Learnt: How to break down dry content into bite-sized information that is easy for visitors of all age groups to understand and enjoy.

Move the Future

Summary: This interacitvet outlines the exciting future of the local rail industry and the investment into new technologies which SMRT has done.

Methodology: Gesture-based Interactive using Azure Kinect; Single user
